African Fashion Week Montreal 2018

-

Since I came to Montreal, I could not have enough of its multicultural society - I had an opportunity to meet people of different cultures, religion and kind of beauty. I come from Slovakia - the small country in Europe where the population is not so diverse, so you could imagine my enthusiasm when I came here. I mean, of course, you could meet some people from Africa, China or India in my country, too - but being with them in a closer contact and getting to know them more personally is very rare there.
You might know my friend Martha from the previous article about my "WE are fashion" project, where I took some streetstyle photos of her. I am really amazed by her appearance and I enjoyed our photoshooting very much. During the action, I imagined that perfect moment when one day I will be at some African-themed fashion show as a photographer and I will try to capture the divine beauty of all the models and designs from various places of Africa. Just close your eyes and let your fantasy speak - is it not an exciting idea? My dream came true thanks to the impressive African Fashion Week Montreal event and thanks to two amazing and charismatic men - Gilles Wouanko, the Director of the event and Henri Abraham Soumah, the Artistic Director.
So here I am - standing in a media pit with my name tag "Photographer - Eva Cavojcova", holding my DSLR camera so tightly, taking photos of Martha again, loving every pose of all models and trying to keep in memory every moment of this magical atmosphere.

My personal project - Montreal photoshooting: WE are fashion!

6 months ago, I nervously landed at Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport and I was just thinking about what can Montreal actually give to me - I mean, yes Canada is a beautiful country and Quebec is an interesting province, but imagine to live in a new city for longer period of time. Another question was - what did I really expect?
I came to Canada because my boyfriend got a very good job in Montreal (in English speaking company), so I saw this as an amazing opportunity for me, too. Even though the whole process of getting a work permit was very (I mean VERY) stressful because I have always "luck" speaking about the paper work; and I did not get any proper job through my stay; thanks to Montreal I have realized one thing - I am a very strong person and nothing could really stop me. It could now sound selfish, but when you are miles and miles away from your home, family and your native language it is hard and you need to learn how to "survive". I mean, a language barrier (speaking about French) made me really hard time here. I know that you could now think: "Girl, you decided to live in French province, what did you expect?" Well, I did not expect that NOBODY will give me an opportunity to work, because of not speaking French fluently! It is interesting that many locals told me: "That is impossible, you do not need French to find a proper job here." Well, guys I have a half year long list of proofs I do... But I do not want to sound angry or negatively, I just want to show you the reality I have faced here.

Rodarte F/W 2018 - a garden full of fashion

-

It is just a normal day. The sun is shining so strong, you can rarely see where you are going. Little bit later you realize that you are walking through a beautiful garden...But this garden is magical. You are trying to blink very fast because you want to know if this is not only a dream - the dream where you are looking at different types of flowers you have never seen before: roses - red flamenco ruffle diva;  peonies - white romantic tulle girl or orchids - black embroidered femme fatale. You can not believe your eyes so you just stand there and observe them speechlessly. Their moves are so elegant and slow, their look is mysterious. In that moment you believe this is only a dream...or not?

Welcome to the Rodarte F/W 2018 ready-to-wear collection where a fantasy becomes real. How can be something so wonderful?! I think no words are needed...enjoy the photos!

What does the concept of "sustainable fashion" mean for me as a fashionista?

I freely admit my guilt as a fashion-obsessive. My crime is buying stylish handbags and shoes. But I am not that kind of person who buys something just because it looks interesting or because it was on sale and throws it away after one wear or does not ever wear it, at all. When I am shopping, everytime I analyze and style some outfits with that particular handbag or shoes in my head and just start to ask myself: "Will I wear it more than 10 times? Do I really need it?" I am trying to shop reasonably, but even I sometimes break this rule.

After watching The True Cost movie I realized lots of things and was ashamed, I will not lie. When you have your "shopping fever" with your best friend and run fast and furious through H&M, Zara or Primark and spot massive amount of clothes lying on the floor, do you ever think of sustainable fashion? When I have worked part-time as a Sales Advisor at one retail store a few years ago,  I experienced very often situations when people went crazy and almost ruined the store, just because the sale season was on. I hated it. Today's  post is about my personal opinion as a fashionista to the whole concept of "sustainable fashion". Does it mean the end of fashion?

Barbie Expo - a magical exhibition of haute couture

-

When I read an article about Barbie Expo based here in Montreal few days ago, I did not exactly know what to think. I mean, I am not that little girl who is in love with Barbies anymore. But I was curious and I still had it in my mind, especially after reading a slogan: "It is not for the little girl you once were, it is for a grown-up, sophisticated fashionista you have become; for the connaisseur of haute couture and lover of all things beautiful that you are today."  So I called my friend Susana and we decided to go.

I will tell you that it was a very good decision (not because of the free admission)! I was so impressed. This exhibition contains over 1000 of Barbies, however it is not about the Barbie doll at all - you have an amazing opportunity to learn more about history of fashion, discover different cultures and see the traditional clothes from around the world exposed directly on those Barbies. You will meet Holly from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sandy from Grease or Alex from Flashdance. Then you can admire haute couture and designs by Donna Karan, Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren or Givenchy; and you can be that little girl for a while again! This is really not Barbie the way you remember her!

Runway show - SFW Montreal

-

Our next stop with SFW Montreal is finally here! Yes, I am speaking now about the exciting runway show where I saw remarkable creations and was closer to the designers' personalities. This is exactly the reason why I love fashion - everybody has a different point of view and I find really fascinating to watch their unique interpretations of it. It is not only about the clothes they made, it is about their self-expression, as well.

Thanks to Jodi Goodfellow, Nikole Mutombo, Aimon Syeda and the whole team I enjoyed this night so much. I want also to point out the work of the hair & makeup artists - Rachel Schultz cosmetiques and JACQUES DESPARS and charismatic models. Somebody could say that when you are going to attend some fashion show, the clothes are the most (if not the only one) thing that is really interesting for you. That is a pitty because I think every detail really matters! Imagine catwalks without models, imagine models without amazing makeup and hairstyles. Everything just comes together!

Business of Fashion Conference - SFW Montreal

-

When I first came to Montreal, honestly, I did not know what to expect. I mean, I love fashion and love to chat with people who are from the fashion industry and have similar interests as I do. I wanted to make some contacts, know more about the culture here, meet local designers, bloggers or photographers. As time goes by, I am happy to say that I have already attended so many interesting events where I met lots of talented people!

In today's article I would like to present you my experience with SFW Montreal - namely the Business of Fashion Conference event where Jodi Goodfellow, the founder of SFW, and Elise Gasbarrino, the founder of STYLE.ca, hosted amazing speakers. Enjoy it!

HEAVENLY BODIES: FASHION AND THE CATHOLIC IMAGINATION

-

Everybody has its own belief. I believe in myself and fashion. Despite the fact I am not  very religious, the presentation of the relationship between fashion and religion caught my attention a lot. The Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination exhibition offers something special - something spiritual.
As you could already read here, my trip to NYC was one of the best experiences I ever had. I want to go back so badly! Obviously, one of the places where I wanted to go was The Metropolitan Museum Of Art where the mentioned exhibition has been already presented - it was great timing!

Meet HATCHI DESIGN - a chic and comfortable style for every millennial woman

I am 24 years old woman and as I am getting older, I have realized that I want to not only look great and stylish in clothes I chose to wear; I want to feel comfortable, as well. My body and my soul just must love every fashion piece I have in my closet. I found minimalist style closer to me and somehow I am now more feeling myself in simply colours/cuts (but I love to add some original shoes, handbags or accessories to my outfits, for sure). I love black, white, and grey colours - maybe its because I am very creative person and I need to show this creativity through my work, not only my clothes - I am feeling more productive then.

As you could have already read, I will be a part of stunning SFW Montreal fashion event and I spotted very interesting brand called HATCHI DESIGN. Selma Benterki, who is a founder and fashion designer of this brand, impressed me with her designs a lot. They are simple, original and so chic! Selma will present her debut runway on Friday June 22, at Crowley Arts Centre in Montreal. Read more and enjoy our small interview!

Jillian Joy HC - when your dream about the perfect wedding dress comes true

-

Do you remember that time when you were a little girl and dreamed about your perfect wedding, and mainly, about your perfect wedding dress? Well, I am not an exception. Few days ago I spoke with one incredibly talented woman - Jillian Joy Ubando, who has golden hands! Jillian recently graduated from Ryerson University in Canada this Spring and is already receiving nationwide attention for her hand-crafted wedding gowns. She is set to make her runway debut at Startup Fashion Week (SFW) on Friday June 22, at Crowley Arts Centre in Montreal, where she will be showcasing a collection of bridal gowns from her own brand Jillian Joy Hand Crafted.

I am very pleased that I had an opportunity to speak with her. Enjoy our small interview!

New York, New York

-

I could watch Friends and Sex and the City again and again... I saw it for zillion times, but I am still enjoying it like for the very first time. Why? Except for the best characters, funny quotes and storylines, I love these TV shows because of New York! The vibe of this city is unbelievable. No doubt I wanted to go there so badly!
When we moved to Montreal, Adrian wanted me to reach my dream so he booked flight tickets to NYC and I became speechless - I will be in the same city as Carrie Bradshaw, Friends or Kevin! I felt like a child. But a happy one... Thanks, darling :-)

Met Gala 2018 - Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination - my top 10 Celebrity outfits

-

The Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is surely the most prestigious fashion event of the year. It takes the place on the first Monday in May, which this year fell on May 7. No doubt that I love The First Monday in May movie, where you can go backstage at this incredible event and meet not only Anna Wintour, but incredible celebrity outfits and stunning museum decorations, as well.  Every event is connected with specific exhibition theme so celebrities have special dress codes. This year's exhibition theme was  Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination and I was really amazed.

Icons of woman's closet / THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

-

I adore black colour. Somebody could argue that this colour describes a huge depression and looks boring. I think the opposite - if you wear black, you can shine more than in any bold colour because you will look elegant, confident and sexy, as well. Black is also very practical by reason of ability to create many original outfits during a few minutes. To be concise, it is wearable with everything.  Imagine cute dress in this colour and many of your "what to wear for today's party, dinner, date, meeting" problems can be solved. There is no doubt that this is an essential fashion staple!

Do you think that the little black dress was first created by Hubert de Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's ? If so, you are not right, because the LBD is a little older than that. Read more and find some interesting facts about this versatile fashion piece!

Pamper your skin with these facial masks and find some useful tips & tricks!

-
Free days are ideal for pampering and relaxing. Especially if the weather sucks and it is raining all day. This is the ideal time! Why? Because you can not do anything else (except for having boring laundry day or trying to find some new recipes because you have already cooked really everything and you are lost). Stop. You should use this time for yourself (not for your man, kids, pets or whatever). In today's post I will show you some facial masks which  I found interesting (everybody knows that sheet masks rules at this time) and I will also show you some useful tips and tricks how to use them, because if you are do it wrong, it will have zero effects (even though your sheet mask looks like cute unicorn or has cool glitters). So let's go!

STYLING: Fashion is FUN!

-

Conservative poses, prejudices or outfits without passion are not what I imagine when it comes to fashion. We take it seriously. You can not be original and respectful if you are afraid of making fun. Just relax and play with clothes, accessories - mix them all together in a way you love and do not care about others opinion. Because this is FUN!

Meet Lil Miquela and Shudu - the world's first virtual influencer and supermodel

Technology has a huge impact in the fashion world, as well. It is unbelievable that now you can see all the most majestic fashion shows with the view from the front row and you do not even need to have a ticket or special invitation. You are just at home, eating tasty pepperoni pizza, drinking Coke Zero in your pyjamas with messy hair and admiring Chanel's elegance with every bite. Imagine the fashion lovers from the 20th century who can not enter those "private spaces " or "fashion parades", and who just read about them in the newspapers and everything what they had was their own imagination.
What if I tell you that today's digital technology can make some very big changes speaking not only about revolutionary concept of runway shows or futuristic clothes? Have you ever thought about the replacing of the real models with the virtual ones?
Unreal is getting real. Are models' days really numbered? And what about influencers?

Atelier Fontana - Le sorelle della moda

-

I have already seen so many good films about fashion designers - Coco before Chanel, Dior and I, Valentino: The Last Emperor or The Boy Who made Shoes for Lizards. Today, I was in that mood when you just want to relax with a cup of good mint tea and watch something interesting (yes, something about fashion). Something what will catch not only your eye, but your heart, as well. And you will think about it all day. I decided to watch movie about famous Fontana sisters, who worked so hard to reach their dreams. I was shocked. I laughed. I cried. I was proud. This film will definitely wake up your emotions. It was a really good choice!

Fashion Preview 2018 with The Montreal Fashion Society

-

Two days ago, I had a very special night. You know, Montreal is my home now and before my arrival, I have often thought about what could this city exactly offer to me, speaking mainly about fashion. What do the local designers look like, what are their ideas, techniques and visions? I am a big fashion lover so I always am very excited about every fashion show. But this one was totally different. Thanks to The Montreal Fashion Society and Lamia Boucheneb I attended the Fashion Preview event which I  absolutely loved !

-

Every fashion brand is represented its DNA by original clothes, and by (not less important) unique makeup and hairstyles. Not only fashion designers do magic. Makeup can dictate stunning fashion trends, as well. It gives the right vibe to the model, to the clothes and to the whole atmosphere. I love fashion shows because even if there will be five female models and 20 outfits together, you have a special opportunity to see so many faces of these women. The same person can be a rockstar, a sweet girl or a femme fatale during few minutes! Ah, fashion is just unbelievable.

This is the top 10 make-up trends for 2018 which you will absolutely love!

Ideas that changed fashion/ THE WHITE WEDDING DRESS - the only colour for a bride

-

Traditionally, women had married in blue or pink or their favourite colour, making a wedding dress a garment that they could then wear again. Working-class women frequently opted for practical black. But the young Queen Victoria made a big change in a fashion history.

New York Fashion Week F/W 2018 report

-

Once upon a time, there was an American girl who had a busy life. She loved walking across the Fifth Avenue in her majestic Oscar De La Renta dress and waving to the yellow cabs. One night she was wild and sexi, another one she pretended to be sweet and girly. During the day, she just went to Starbucks for a coffee in her Michael Kors tartan coat holding those huge shopping bags. Of course, she can not miss her sunglasses. In her dreams, New York is the eclectic city with many faces. She enjoyed dating with this city as Carrie Bradshaw did. Nothing is impossible there. You could be a futuristic woman by Wang or you just could transform into modern alien thanks to Jeremy. It is up to you...

Icons of woman's closet /MINISKIRT

-

The miniskirt was a sartorial summation of the 1960s: the growing gap - in attitude and in dress - between youth and the parental generation; an increased (sexual) liberation for women; and a readiness to challenge ossified rules of propriety. It seemed as if women suddenly woke up one morning and decided that dresses and skirts should be lifted to new heights. This new approach to dress design turned fashion on its ear and it started a whole new era for them...

STYLING: Sweet girl

-

We often think that we have to take our life very seriously because we are grown up women. No more fun and spontaneity; just work, children and duties. Even though we are in our 25 or 30, we are feeling so much older.

Icons of woman's closet / TRENCH COAT

-

One of the oldest army garments still widely worn, the trench coat was devised as a means of keeping the endless mud off uniforms in the trenches of World War I. This practical, versatile and utilitarian fashion piece is always discreetly elegant and combinable with everything. But as the trench coat has become a fashion staple, its iconic origin is almost forgotten.
